Aiden's 8th Month

I can't believe another month has gone by without any posts to the blog. Here's what's been going on in our lives in the past month:

Andy and some friends decided to climb Mt. Whitney the first weekend of October. Aiden and I drove up with him and walked around the area before heading back home after dinner. The group hiked up at night and then came down in the daylight. It took Andy about 14 hours round-trip and he got quite sick near the top, probably due to a combination of altitude, dehydration and exhaustion. Altogether they hiked 23 miles!

Last week we drove up north to San Francisco for a little vacation. We stayed in Fisherman's Wharf for three nights and got to see most of the things we wanted to see. We stayed so busy and had to save some things for our next visit. After a long day in the car, we met up with some friends for a rooftop party to watch the Blue Angels fly overhead (scared Aiden nearly to death). It was cool to see how people live there and see an amazing view of the bay. The first full day we walked from our hotel to the Golden Gate Bridge. We spent the entire day exploring the parks surrounding the south end of the bridge. The second day we drove across the bridge to Marin County. We went to Muir Woods to see the redwoods and the view of the San Francisco area from across the bay. We stopped at a beach overlook and then headed back to the hotel for a rest before heading out for a walk around the neighborhood. Then we walked a block or two to the wharf for a little shopping and a delicious seafood dinner at Scoma's. The next day we wanted to go to Alcatraz before leaving town, but a storm ruined those plans. We packed up and hit Coit Tower for some nice views of the city and made a very important stop before leaving town: the Ghirardelli Square. That's right, my paradise! This is where it all began and where they still make ice cream and chocolate to this day.

We then headed a couple of hours south on Pacific Coast Highway and spent two nights in Monterey. It is a cute town that we would love to go back to. We went to the Monterey Bay Aquarium, which Aiden loved! We also walked through some parks along the beach and did some shopping. We took a little detour off the highway to see the famous Pebble Beach Golf Course and the beautiful beaches along the way. We also got to see some of Carmel-by-the-Sea before heading back to the highway. We then spent a couple of days seeing the area around San Luis Obispo, including Morro Bay, Pismo Beach and Avila Beach. On our last day we left San Luis and continued south all the way to Santa Monica where we met with Andy's sister for lunch before driving back home to the desert. It was great to get away and see part of the state that we haven't seen before. Aiden did so well with all of the driving and stroller rides that we put him through. He slept pretty much anytime we were driving and enjoyed seeing new things while on our walks exploring new places.

Aiden has grown so much in the last month! Everyone that sees him comments on how big he is. He finally has some 'chunk', complete with leg rolls! He is loving trying new foods, and his current favorites are sweet potatoes and pears. We will start him on chunkier foods pretty soon, but we're taking it slow for now, sticking to step 1 completely pureed foods. His favorite thing to do right now is practice his crawling skills. He is great at getting on his hands and knees and rocking back and forth. He is pulling his knees forward, but isn't consistently pushing his hands forward yet. He lifts one off the ground to reach for things, but then usually puts it back down in the same spot instead of moving it forward. He is managing to creep forward, but still pretty slowly. He likes to get on his hands and toes with his butt in the air and crawl that way, making some progress forward. He wants so badly to get into things higher up--he stares up at the couch like he's planning how he's going to get up there one day! He has managed to pull himself up using his toy basket from his tummy onto his knees so that he could get some toys out. Only a matter of time before we're chasing him all around!

Not much else is happening around here. Aiden and I spend our days playing together around the house, walking with friends, meeting Andy and friends at the park, and squealing in delight every time the dog walks by Aiden. He absolutely thinks that Shiloh is the greatest thing in the world! He also really enjoys being outside, even if we just walk out to the backyard to see the garden, he immediately calms down and tries to take in everything. It's so wonderful seeing him enjoy some of the things we take for granted in our everyday lives!
