Aiden Michael McEvoy

We found out we were pregnant in mid-August 2008 and were very excited to welcome our baby around April 21! We were both very ready to start a new chapter in our lives. The first part of the pregnancy was easy and I never had the dreaded 'morning sickness.' I remember feeling him kick for the first time while sitting at my desk at work writing lesson plans. His kicks became more and more frequent, especially in the evenings on my left side. For some reason I was convinced we were having a girl. Around 18 weeks we had an ultrasound where we were told that we were most likely having a boy, but 'most likely' wasn't good enough for us! In the 20th week we decided to have a 3D/4D ultrasound to find out for sure, and we did!

The second half of the pregnancy was just as easy as the first, with the exception of some back pain from being on my feet all day at work and a lot of stress from my job. In mid-January my doctor told me I could only work for two more weeks due to my stress and back pain. I thought it was early to stop working but really didn't complain because we had so much to do before the baby arrived in April and hadn't had time to do any of it yet.

On the night of February 10 I noticed some different pains in my lower back and just felt weird. I didn't sleep much at all that night. In the morning I felt worse and my lower abdomen hurt. Over the course of a couple of hours the pain got pretty bad. I called a two nurses (Mary Ellen and Erin) and was told that it sounded like a urinary tract infection. I called Andy at work to come drive me to the hospital for the test because the pain was becoming really severe. Afterwards we went home to wait for the results. The pain started coming in waves every minute or so and became so unbearable that Andy drove me back to the hospital where we were told that I was in labor....I had no idea because it just didn't occur to me that this could be happening at only 30 weeks into the pregnancy! They tried to stop the labor several times but my body just wasn't responding. My doctor decided that I needed to be rushed to Loma Linda, near Los Angeles, but I couldn't go until my contractions had stopped. Finally late that night they were temporarily able to stop my contractions and I was taken by ambulance on a 2.5 hour ride to LLUMC. We arrived around 2 AM and Andy arrived shortly after.

For the next few days my contractions continued. The medical staff tried to stop my labor, and they were somewhat successful. But on the evening of February 15 I was too far dilated and the baby was ready! Aiden Michael McEvoy was born on February 16 at 4:49 AM, weighing 4 pounds 2.5 ounces and 17.5 inches long. He was very alert right away and didn't need assistance breathing. He was perfect!
